Expanding the Number of TV Viewers Using 360 Degree Projection Displays

Bookmark and Share

How do you increase the number of simultaneous viewers that can watch a single TV viewing device? One solution is to convert the flat television screen into a rounded or completely circular (360 degree) display device. This allows viewers to see the display device regardless of where they are standing around the television. 360 degree display devices can be used for a variety of purposes ranging from digital signage to providing high-impact video content.

Figure 1 shows how the DynaScan 360 display can be used to provide rich media messages to public places. This example shows how a single display device can be positioned in the center of a public area to provide media rich images to a large group of people.

Some of the challenges that had been overcome to create a 360 degree display include creating large high-resolution displays that have excellent color uniformity, lower power consumption, high brightness and a wide viewing angle. These have been overcome by using spinning LED technology, precise timing control and RGB LEDs.

The DynaScan system uses a spinning drum that contains RGB LEDs. The precision motion controls to determine what pixel, color and intensity should occur during specific positions of the spinning wheel. The precision system can control the location within 1/100th degree of accuracy. The size of the display is determined by the spinning bar and DynaScan has produced displays with heights of 62".

360 Display Device Source-Dynascan

To create all colors of light, DynaScan uses a special combined red green and blue LED that can mix their colors to produce the color spectrum. For other color LED display systems, there is distortion introduced due to offset mounting of LEDs. LED positioning offset is the difference between where the LED light source originates and where the desired origination point that occurs due to offset that occurs due to mechanical mounting of the LED. The DynaScan system combined RGB LED contains red, green and blue junctions at the same spot which create a bright and sharp pixel that can seen from close or long distances.

Because each pixel is created by a combination of LEDs which can produce precise colors and intensity levels, the display device is able to project the same colors over an area without variations in the color or components of the color (precise color uniformity).

The RGB LEDs produce direct light (as opposed to projected light) which is much easier to see at distances. DynaScan outdoor displays can produce 5,000 NITS (5000 candela per square meter). This means that the displays can be very effective in public areas with high brightness.

Because the display does not require high voltage or electron beams, the power consumption is low, which also results in very low heat levels. The viewing angle for the display is very wide allowing the display to be seen at any angle.

To display video image so everyone can see, the display can be partitioned into 3 sections (each section has the same display). Images on the display can also be rotated around to create amazing displays.

Some of the ways to get media converted into a format that is usable by the display includes a computer interface or an image scaler. The computer interface allows for the connection and processing of video and/or digital images. The computer interface can mix video with AVI, MPEG, WMV, Flash and several other digital image formats for the display. An image scaler enables the 360 degree display device to operate like a regular television set. The video feed (component, composite, S-video, VGA or DVI) is simply connected to the scaler, which can adjust rotation, brightness and color.
