Sending TV content through the Internet using
existing broadcast transmission systems can result in poor quality or
broken video and audio quality, require extra licensing fees, and may not
have content protection (encryption). Not supporting Internet TV streaming
can result in reduced sales revenues and job loss and choosing the wrong
system can result in massive trouble calls, higher costs, and lost
customers.
There are three key Over the Top Television
(OTT) streaming solutions; HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Open Web Media
(WebM), and Silverlight Streaming. Each of these solves some of the key
challenges created by streaming TV content through the Internet. This
white paper defines the key requirements for OTT systems and how the HLS,
WebM, and Silverlight systems solve these issues in different ways.
